ZED ZONE base building guide
Since late October 2026 you can build walls, floors and roofs block by block instead of only taking over a house. Pick the block for the job, keep storage near your benches, and plan for hordes that look for the weakest wall.
- Structure tab: wood, stone, metal, glass and hay blocks.
- Removing a block or Ctrl+Z refunds all materials.
- Hordes look for open doors first, then break the weakest wall.
How ZED ZONE voxel building works
The construction panel has a Structure tab (Beta 0.9.99.9.1). You place walls, floors, steps and roofs to make multi-story buildings, and furniture, workbenches, deployables and items can stand on upper floors. Remove the floor under them and they drop to the level below. Your own roof hides when you walk inside, like the map’s buildings. Official
- Mistakes are free: removing blocks or undoing with Ctrl+Z refunds all materials. Official
- Surface only: since Beta 0.9.99.9.7 Structure building works only above ground, after builds placed underground were found to take materials while staying invisible. Official
Block materials compared
| Block | Made from | Strength | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Wood | Basic | Easy to get; good first walls. |
| Stone | Rock | Sturdier, more durable | Needs mining. |
| Metal | Iron plates | Highest; for key areas and defenses | Iron plates compete with crafting. |
| Glass | Glass | Fragile | Semi-transparent: lets light in and lets you watch outside. |
| Hay | Plant fibre | Cheap | Catches fire easily and spreads it to nearby structures. |
From the September 2026 roadmap, confirmed as shipped in the 1.0 notes. Official For glass and iron plates, see crafting stations and materials.
Damage, destruction and the Repair Hammer
- Walls can be destroyed by weapons, explosions and melee, and a building collapses once its walls take enough damage. Torn-down walls drop stone, wood and glass. Official
- The Repair Hammer repairs damaged buildings and built objects (furnaces, workbenches, furniture) with a right-click. Repair costs match what the object drops when destroyed, and liquids like fuel are drawn from containers. Official
- Wall damage near a furnace is cut to a quarter, so smelting does not wreck your base. Official
- The world setting Destructible Buildings, when off, protects the outer walls of map buildings; interior walls, doors, windows and anything you built can still break. Official
Why hordes and NPCs still get in
Since Beta 0.9.99.9.7 hordes check whether doors are open or closed and go for entrances first. When every entrance is sealed, they focus on breaking the weakest wall. Official So a base is only as strong as its cheapest block: a single hay or glass panel is where the horde will push.
Players also report hordes appearing right at a new base, likely woken Dormant Hordes that wander until cleared. Unverified Hired and hostile NPCs breaking into stashes were a common complaint; since Beta 0.9.99.9.1 NPCs no longer search containers or pick up items near your base. Official See raiders and hostile NPCs.
Laying out a base that works
- Keep storage within 6 tiles of your benches. Crafting pulls materials from the nearest containers in that range. Official
- Use your own containers. Containers you built never need a first “Search” and never roll loot. Official
- Fence the approach. Turrets, the Electric Fence and spike traps go outside the weakest wall; see turrets and traps.
- Plan power early. Generators and solar need room; see power.
Choosing where to build
| Spot | Why players pick it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping container yard | Containers are loot, cover and storage; you can lose pursuers between them. Unverified | Raiders and Breakers turn up at container sites. |
| Trader camp | Doctor and trader next door. | The doctor used to move if you built near them (fixed in 0.9.99.9.1). Official |
| Basement / underground | Mushrooms grow well underground. Official | Structure blocks only build on the surface. Official |
| Sturdy house near a road | Fast to reach by car; walls already standing. | Hospitals nearby mean Dormant Hordes. Official |
Windows are doors
A player who blocked windows with wood walls placed outside saw enemies still open the window and climb through, as if the window were close enough to use. Unverified Build the wall into the window line itself, or brick windows up with Structure blocks, and check every window before the first horde night. Furniture and lockers can be dragged into your base for extra storage. video
To tidy up after a fight, the pause menu’s “Clear all items and corpses” removes clutter without deleting high-value items such as the Solar Charger. Official
